We welcome pitches from writers at all stages of their career. Read our pitch guidelines below before submitting.

Have a clear argument
We publish essays that make a case, not just descriptions of a topic. Your piece should have a thesis.

Know your audience
Our readers are curious, educated adults. Don't over-explain, but don't assume specialist knowledge either.

Write beautifully
We care about sentences. Please send us a writing sample that shows your best work.

Response time
We respond to all pitches within 3 weeks. If you haven't heard from us after 4 weeks, feel free to follow up once.

Do you pay contributors? ▾
Yes. We pay all contributors a flat fee of $350 for essays under 2,000 words, $600 for features up to 4,000 words, and negotiated rates for longer investigative pieces. We are committed to paying fairly.
Do you accept unsolicited drafts? ▾
We strongly prefer pitches over completed drafts. A good pitch tells us your argument, your approach, and why you're right for the piece. It saves time for both of us.
Can I republish my piece elsewhere? ▾
We ask for 30 days of exclusivity after publication. After that, you're free to republish with a note that the piece first appeared in Meridian.
How long does the editing process take? ▾
From accepted pitch to publication is typically 4–8 weeks. We do substantive editing, which takes time — we ask for your patience and flexibility.
